Animal Services Volunteers


animal services logoThurston County Animal Services provides enforcement of animal control law as well as sheltering of stray and unwanted pet animals in Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and unincorporated Thurston County.  There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at the animal shelter, such as cleaning kennels, assisting with animal adoptions, working at public events and outreach programs, and providing short-term foster care for strays.

Volunteer Information
 Description:
Volunteer duties can include:

  • Kennel helpers - provide direct care for pets at the Shelter;
  • Office helpers - file, mail out licenses and assist visitors;
  • Public events - help staff information booths at fairs and other public gatherings;
  • Project helpers - assist with special projects as needed;
  • Publicity - take pictures of animals for Petfinder and create educational posters, displays and campaigns;
  • Foster animals - provide a short-term home for young litters or older injured animals;
  • Shelter helpers - maintain the grounds and pick up the dog areas;

Animal Services is located at 3120 Martin Way in Olympia.
 Date(s):
The shelter hours are Tuesday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., with special restrictions on Saturday hours.
 Qualifications:
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Potential volunteers from ages 11-13, must be accompanied by a responsible adult volunteer at all times while at the shelter. Because of inherent danger when working with animals, opportunities for younger volunteers for hands-on animal care are limited. All volunteers must pass a criminal background screening.
 Commitment:
Because of the intensive training required for volunteers, a minimum commitment of four hours per month for at least six months is required.
