ABOUT US
In 1967, the Lacey Police Department was formally established employing three commissioned officers for a city of 7,650. Today, the department has 56 commissioned officers serving a community of approximately 40,000 residents—over 16 square miles. On average, the department responds to 38,000 incidents per year.
To provide the necessary services to the citizens of Lacey, the Police Department is organized into two divisions:
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is comprised of 30 officers, six sergeants, two lieutenants, and a patrol commander. This division is responsible for responding to all 911 and non-emergency calls, writing reports, enforcing traffic laws, investigating collisions, and enforcing criminal laws within the Lacey city limits.
Complementing the Patrol Division is a specialized traffic unit. Two full-time officers are assigned to this unit for purpose of enhancing the safety of the community's roadways through emphasis patrols. In addition, the Patrol Division employs the use of a K-9 unit to support law enforcement activities such as tracking suspects and drug detection duties.
A total of three School Resource Officers supplement the Patrol Division. These officers work in collaboration with North Thurston Public Schools to make our community's schools safer. Duties include responding to calls for service, participation at school events, student instruction, and student and teacher safety.
Support Services Division
The Lacey Police Department's Support Services Division includes the Detective Division, Crime Prevention, and the Records Division.
There are four detectives, one lieutenant, and one police service specialist in Lacey's Detectives Division. The plain clothes unit is responsible for conducting felony, violent crime, fraud, and other specialized investigations. The Lacey Police Department actively manages approximately 700 investigations on average per year.
A dedicated officer is assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit. The Crime Prevention Officer devotes hours within the community educating and training citizens and businesses in an effort to involve them in crime prevention activities.
The Records Division is comprised of five police assistants and one
customer service supervisor, who are the first point of contact for the
public visiting or calling the Lacey Police Department.
Responsibilities include records maintenance, data entry,
processing warrants and court orders, fingerprint and notary services,
and all front desk and phone customer services.
The Support Services Division is supervised by a patrol commander, who
also coordinates the Lacey Police Department's participation in regional
law enforcement activities such as the Thurston County Narcotics Task
Force and emergency management response.
Both the Patrol Division and Support Services Division are supported by three Community Services Officers, and a core group of dedicated volunteers consisting of the Explorer Post, Reserve Officers, and Senior Patrol. Volunteers provide an important auxiliary function to the Lacey Police Department, giving back over 10,000 hours to the community last year.
